Funding Sources

IWEN is funded by membership fees and donations (70% - 75%) and the sale of Nepalese scarves, jewellery and hand bags (25% - 30%). All donation and membership monies received are directly spent on the purpose of the Society, which is education of female children, young adults and women who live in poverty.

Donations and sponsors' monies go directly to the programs whereas IWEN's administration costs are covered by membership fees and a small portion of its fund raising monies. It is IWEN's policy to use its fund raising event monies for the programs and only what administration areas are not covered by membership fees is taken from fund raising funds. Those involved in IWEN work voluntarily, except for those persons directly involved in keeping the IWEN administration business running smoothly.

Administration and/or overhead costs are kept to a minimum and include the following common operating expenditures:

  • Web site domain and web site upkeep
  • Postage and stationary
  • Bank fees and Cheques
  • Communication fees
  • Administration of IWEN's Nepal office (including rent and salary for program manager and villiage liaison
  • Transportation costs for Country Director to visit village schools to supervise those students who have obtained a scholarship.
In Nepal pennies go a long way. Education is the only way to achieve some degree of independence and freedom and to break away from the vicious cycle of poverty. IWEN firmly believes that educating a woman benefits the whole family. Some of IWEN's activities focus on immigrant women in the Okanagan Valley, Canada, who are in need of vocational and life skills training.

IWEN is active in networking with other Canadian and overseas groups that are also involved in the education of women especially in post-conflict situations. IWEN administers its Nepal recipient funds directly through the Nepalese Country Director, which is stationed in Nepal and/or through its Kelowna Directors for Canadian recipients.
